*Born in 1854, the son of a solicitor, Dendy Sadler grew up in Horsham, West Sussex, and while his artistic training took him to London at the age of sixteen, he recalled fondly a happy childhood in the "pleasant old town" . It is precisely this conviviality and this delicacy that the artist portrays in this work. As such, according to Dendy Sadler's profile in The Windsor Magazine, his "archive of quaint old-time recollections, permanently etched in his memory" directly contributed to his choice "to depict the life and manners of the early part of the nineteenth century, generally from 1820 to 1840” (Chester, p. 8)..

He exhibited at the Dudley Gallery from 1872 and at the Royal Academy from the following year until 1890. He was a Fellow of the RBA, also exhibited at the RA (Royal Academy).
