Magnificent Russian icon in tempera on wood, datable to the second half of the 19th century.
At the top of the icon is the mandylion (image of Edessa), a cloth with the depiction of the face of Jesus venerated by the Eastern Christian communities.
Among the saints depicted on the icon can be seen St. Basil, St. Anne and Catherine of Alexandria, as indicated by the inscriptions on the icon.
Saint Basil, whose figure serves as the center of the composition, was an ancient Greek bishop and theologian considered the first of the Cappadocian Fathers. Sant'Anna is considered the mother of the Virgin Mary and is the protector of motherhood in the Orthodox tradition. And finally, Catherine of Alexandria is one of the fourteen auxiliary saints and heavenly patroness of the Italian municipality of Sluderno and of the Russian city of Ekaterinburg.
On the back of the icon there is an illegible inscription, similar to a dedication. Conservative conditions as per photographs, with some defects on the pictorial surface.
