Pair of extraordinary burin engravings designed and created by Adriaen COLLAERT (ca.1560 - 1618), Flemish painter and draftsman.
Prints taken from Piscium Vivae Icones , a series consisting of 30 engravings of marine scientific illustration. Each table shows a group of fish and aquatic mammals marked by their name.
Coastal landscapes inspired by those of Pieter Brueghel form the backdrop to the images, with sailing ships sailing the waters.
The first print is signed on the plate at the bottom right and depicts two specimens of canis marinus , a catfish and a cuckoo .
The second is signed at the bottom left, while the number of the plate is indicated on the right. The engraving represents a hirundo , a cepola , an adonis and a rafmarus .
From these tables emerges a profound scientific interest in nature in general, as Collaert dedicates the same level of detail to both the animals and the landscape in which they are guests. This intent also emerges from the meticulousness with which the numerous shells in the foreground were defined, each different from the others.
In excellent conservative conditions as shown in the photographs, within gilded frames with glass and passe-partout.
